Garlic cloves are actually leaves July 02 2014

Did you know that a garlic clove is actually a "modified" leaf.  When your nutritionist tells you to eat more leafy vegetables, keep Garlic in mind.  The individual cloves also serve as "seeds" although technically they are not seeds, they are leaves.  Each of the leaves you see above ground on the garlic plant serve as bulb wrappers as the bulb is dried and cured.  When you harvest your own garlic it is important to make sure you dig up your bulbs before all of the top leaves have dried down, to preserve some wrappers for your bulb to live in.  Try and leave four to five wrappers for each bulb.
